Meripilus giganteus

The following pictures were taken by Terry Merchant. Its interesting to speculate whether or not, had the tree not collapsed, would the fruiting bodies have been quite as abundant and visible at soil level. Although it appears they are on the left of the second picture.

Terrys Notes:

Mature beech fell over in late spring. Fruiting bodies on the section of exposed bank are to a depth of about 50cm and growing on the ends of fractured roots. Rooting plate is 6m side to side and 2m top to bottom. This illustrates David Lonsdale's contention that by the time the fruiting bodies are produced there may not be a lot of root remaining!
