Air Excavation Tools
Tools such as the Air Spade are designed to remove soil from around underground systems such as tree roots and services.
The device consists of a specially designed hand-held lance which is connected to a large, portable, high-pressure compressor.
The lance produces a powerful jet of air which shatters and displaces the soil as a dust. It does not, however, damage solid items such as roots.
The following picture shows the device in use near a large Wellingtonia (Sequoiadendron giganteum). The system is ideal for exposing roots so that service pipes/wires can be threaded through the trench without any roots needing to be cut.
