Clinometer

A Clinometer is a device which is used to measure the heights of objects such as trees. It does this by measuring the angle between the the top of the tree and the plane on which you are standing. Once you know the angle and the distance that you are standing away from the tree, simple trigonometry (using the tangent of the angle) gives you the tree height.

Many products will calculate the height for you directly on their scales (assuming you are standing at a known distance). Adjustment must be made to the calculation to allow for your own height (as the readings are made at eye-level).

A number of web sites detail the use of Clinometers including how to make a simple one from a protractor.
