Digital MicroProbe (DmP)
The Digital MicroProbe (DmP) is manufactured by Sibtec Scientific, UK. It evolved from the earlier Decay-Detection-Drill (DDD) models which are no longer produced (but are still serviced).
It is essentially a specialised drilling device that measures the rate at which a rotating steel probe bores into the wood (a drill will pass through decayed wood faster than normal wood). By analyzing the rate that the probe drills through the tree, a graph can be plotted and assumptions made.
The sensitivity of the detection allows the individual growth rings to be detected and counted. The earlier DDD models would print the results mechanically within the drilling device itself. The DmP sends the results as a data stream to a computer or field printer.
