IML Fractometer

The Fractometer is a mechanical device which measures the 'strength' of a wood sample. It does this by measuring its bending angle and the point at which it completely breaks.

The sample is obtained by first taking a core sample from the tree by using a borer.

The strength of the wood can be measured at many places along the sample so an idea of the state of the tree stem, at this point, can be determined.

The adjacent photograph shows an older model at the top. The Fractometer is distributed in the UK by Fujikura.
