IML Resistograph
Manufactured by IML in Germany; the Resistograph is a drilling device used to detect decay within trees. Three instruments are available that offer drilling depths of 300, 400 and 500mm respectively. Results can be recorded instantaneously on waxed paper or sent digitally to a computer.
The Resistograph functions by driving a microdrill (3mm tip, 1.1mm shaft) into the timber at constant speed using a Bosch drill attachment.
The differences in torque required to drill through different wood types are recorded, [less torque (power/force) is required to drill through decayed wood].
