Surface Roots, Oldham.

by Andy Johnson

These pictures are of roots from a London plane which have found their way over a kerb and back under the (thin) tarmac of a companies car park. I imagine there was a consolidated mulch / litter layer above the kerbs in order for this to happen.

The trees are now TPO'd. The car park was recently sold by Ferranti PLC to Housing units of Hollinwood (Oldham) who despite the outline planning granted, continue to use it as a car park because OMBC made more car parking a condition of development for the extension of the retail space.

I managed to talk them into sacrificing about 10 parking bays and hand lifting the (ruined) tarmac to the benefit of the trees. The area has been mulched and planted with shrubs. My brother in law works for the security and he got me the job! (He has a degree in forestry from Bangor....How odd is that?)
