The Double Fisherman's Knot.

Used principally to join together two lengths of rope such as a lowering rope. Also, used as a means of making a ring strop which is then wrapped around a life line to create a sliding prussik knot.

Stage 1. Position the two ropes side by side and form a loop with one around the other.

Stage 2. Wrap the free end around itself.

Stage 3. Continue to wrap making sure the second wrap is below the first.

Stage 4. Feed the free end through both wraps and tighten to produce a sliding knot.

Stage 5. Take the other rope end and tie a duplicate knot but tie this one in the opposite direction (important).

Stage 6.

Stage 7.

Stage 8. Tighten the second knot and then pull both sliding knots together.

Stage 9. They should fit together snugly. If they don't, then you may have tied the second knot in the wrong direction.
